Congenial off-court and a fierce competitor on-court, Mikkelsen was an All-American, and one of the game's first true power forwards. Standing 6'7" and weighing 230 pounds, Mikkelsen was an intense rebounder and tenacious defender. He led Hamline University of St. Paul, MN to the 1949 NAIA Championship. Mikkelsen played ten solid years (699 of 704 games) for the Minneapolis Lakers, teaming with Hall of Fame center George Mikan to form one of the most dominant frontcourts in NBA history. He scored over 10,000 points in his NBA career, won four NBA Championships and was a six-time NBA All-star.
