With his quick hands, great passing skill and fierce competitiveness, Phillip's was one of the best point guards in the nation. He captained the famous Illinois University "Whiz Kids" of the 1940s. Phillip's excelled under pressure and was a two-time All-American and the 1943 National College Player of the Year. He helped lead Illinois to two Big Ten Championships and an undefeated season (1943). Phillip's returned from World War II to lead the reunited "Whiz Kids" to a Big Ten second place finish. During his 11-year pro career, he became the first player in NBA history to register more than 500 assists in a single season in 1952. He helped lead the Boston Celtics to the team's first NBA championship in 1957.
