Nicknamed "One Grand" for scoring exactly 1,000 points in his college career, Schmidt was a powerful center who would explode for baskets from all angles. Recognized as one of the nation's greatest college basketball players of his era and a four-time All-Conference selection, he led Kansas State to four straight conference titles. With Schmidt as the Central Conference's leading scorer, Kansas State rolled to 47 straight victories. He was named All-American and Second-Team AAU All-America in 1932 . After college, he became an AAU star with Reno Creameries and the Denver Piggly-Wiggly team.
