{FirstName:value} {LastName:value} John Chaney Coach
Inducted in 2006
BIO
When he retired in 2006, Chaney was just the sixth coach and the frist African-American coach to reach 700 wins. Chaney played high school ball in Philadelphia before attending Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida on an athletic scholarship. After graduating, Chaney returned to Philadelphia where he had a brief stint with the Harlem Globetrotters. He was named MVP of the Eastern Basketball League for the 1959-60 season. Injuries sustained in a 1966 automobile accident ended his playing career. He remained in Philadelphia and over the next ten years coached in public schools. Cheyney State University (now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania) named him head coach in 1972. He coached Cheyney State to the 1978 NCAA Div. II National Championship and left the school in 1982 with a 228-59 record. He took over as head coach at Temple University in 1982 and compiled fifteen 20-win seasons. He coached the Temple Owls to 17 NCAA Division I appearances.
